Welcome to The Ancestors Table! I’m Cassia and I’m so glad you’re here.
The Ancestors Table exists to bring back old-world, traditional and ancestral forms of cooking that have been lost to faster, modern modalities. Our greatest goal is to help our readers learn to make food that is nutrient-rich and above all else: unprocessed! Knowing what is in our food is SO important to keep our families safe & healthy.
My Background in Health and Wellness
I have always been passionate about health and wellness. With over 12 years of health care experience and 4 years of nursing experience working in women’s health, I have become well versed in the health challenges facing us today.
In my role as an OBGYN nurse, I have treated many women suffering from postpartum depression, anxiety, obesity, and trouble regulating hormones… Especially after the birth of a child.
I have found so much fulfillment in working with women to promote healthy practices during the childbearing years, specifically enhancing nutrition and exercise!
Much of my passion comes from my own experiences after the birth of my kids…
My Personal Health Journey
In 2018 I had my first sweet son and then had two more consecutive pregnancies quickly after in 2020 and 2021. My 3 babies are my absolute world BUT 3 babies in less than 4 years can take its toll on the body.
During these years of constant sleep deprivation, anxiety, weight fluctuations, and mental stress I noticed my overall health began to suffer. I started having trouble sleeping, panic attacks, and severe stomach pains after eating. After the birth of my third sweet baby, I decided that I wanted to be the best version of myself for my growing family and had to make a change…
I began making slow but deliberate changes to my lifestyle. I focused on strength training and improving my nutrition. I began going back to the ways our ancestors made food… Eating high-quality protein, fermenting foods, baking sourdough, and cooking as much as possible from scratch. When my youngest was about 8 months old, I began to shed pounds, my period regulated for the first time in 15 years and my energy levels sky-rocketed.
Why Eat an Ancestral Diet?
Food today has declined in quality. With so many preservatives, additives, and even chemicals added to our food sources, it’s no wonder so many people have gluten intolerances, food allergies, and IBS.
Our ancestors knew the secret to a healthy gut was to ferment dairy, vegetables, and grains. They ate animals as protein sources from nose to tail. They used traditional, slow cooking methods. The quick, fast-food methods of modern cooking have removed the art of cooking and our gut is paying the price.
My pursuit of wellness, healthcare training, and nursing experience has led me to research and experiment with ancestral methods of nutrition. I made my first sourdough starter in my very own kitchen and began experimenting with everything from artisanal loaves to chocolate cupcakes! I love knowing the bread I make for my growing kids is healthy and great for their gut health! We also love to incorporate fermented foods wherever we can and have learned to source staple products like regenerative-farmed beef and raw milk.
Here at The Ancestor Table, we hope we can be a friend and helpful resource along the way as you pursue a healthier lifestyle like that of our ancestors. Happy Cooking!
